CHARLOTTE , NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Dogs have always been mans best friend, acting more and more like their human counterparts. Now that bond is getting even closer. CBD oil, used by humans for anxiety and depression, is being passed down to our four legged friends.

“I believe it though. They have dog perfume, doggy ice cream, any type of things people have. They have dog beer now,” said Lauren Plowman, a dog owner in Charlotte.

Michael Sims is one of the owner’s of Charlotte CBD, a dispensary that will soon open in Plaza Midwood. It will offer CBD oil made from hemp, which the owners say is lower in THC and meets all state guidelines. Oils will be sold for both humans and their pets.

“All dogs will benefit from this and cats alike,” said Sims.

CBD oil is legal, to a degree, in North Carolina and South Carolina.

In North Carolina, oil with at least 10% CBD and no more than 0.3% THC is allowed to treat intractable epilepsy and in university-lead clinical trials.

In South Carolina oil can be used legally to treat epilepsy, but it must contain less than 0.9% THC.

As for its use in pets, the verdict is still out among pet owners.

“I just read about it the other day for children so I guess dogs are ok,” said Andrew Adams.

A vet told FOX 46 Charlotte that pet owners should use CBD oil at their own risk. Vets are not legally allowed to prescribe it as a medication and there is very little research to see what effects it could have on animals.
