CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — FOX 46 is getting results just one day after we showed you how some of Charlotte’s hottest businesses are off-limits to people in wheelchairs.
We called the property managers and businesses that appeared to be inaccessible to people in wheelchairs.
“There’s no good way to get into your business,” FOX 46’s Caroline Fountain told one business owner.
We called and emailed the company that manages the French Quarter. “Several of the businesses there are not wheelchair accessible.”
They haven’t responded. Great news for Newk’s and Starbucks fans. I’m told the 101 Independence Center at Trade and Tryon is putting up new signs that will point wheelchair users to an accessible entrance through the lobby area. I’m told those new signs will be up end of November or early December.
I also spoke with the owner of the Dandelion Market on 5th Street.
“A couple of days ago we came by and visited. One of my friends in a wheelchair noticed he couldn’t get inside the building.”
The owner told me he’s faced complaints before and went through mediation earlier this year to fix the access problem.
He says the sidewalk is too narrow to build a ramp. The best solution – he told me – is to offer curbside service.
If you have trouble accessing a business, you can get help through the Disability Rights and Resources Organization located right here in Charlotte.
