Chelsea Clinton took to Twitter this week to compliment one of the newest members of Charlotte’s City Council, who happened to participate in last year’s protests following the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott.
“Mr. President, Braxton Winston is a superb example of an actual “very fine” person,” Clinton wrote, apparently referencing the President’s remarks following the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA in August.

Winston first began getting attention on social media when SB Nation Senior Editor Nate Scott, who attended high school with Winston according to QCityMetro, tweeted out a photo from the protests. In it, Winston is standing in front of police officers with no shirt on, fist raised.

The photo has 12,000 retweets, including one by Clinton, and it has been liked 38,000 times.

We first met him when he helped rescue a neighbor from a domestic violence situation.
He later attended a march against domestic violence– his first-ever march, but far from his last.
Winston was seen again when he participated in the protests that followed the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. During the protests he was arrested, charged with an “extraordinary event violation.”

Nearly two months after the shooting, Winston was known as a vocal advocate for the social activist group ‘Charlotte Uprising.’
He was one of the only protestors seen at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police event aimed at rebuilding trust in the community following the shooting. He stopped by as he was on his way to a Charlotte Uprising meeting down the street at Johnson C. Smith University.

Winston was the second top vote-earner in Tuesday’s election, following only Julie Eiselt. All four members elected to the council were running as Democrats.
