(FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — A person has been transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling 70 feet from Crowder’s Mountain just moments after taking some pictures, the Gastonia Fire Department said.
The incident happened at 7:57 a.m. Friday, March 1 at Crowder’s Mountain located at 500 Park Office Lane. Gastonia Fire said two climbers were hiking up the backside trail and were taking pictures near the lookout also known as the climbing wall of the mountain.
One of the climbers lost balance, and fell approximately 70 feet down the wall. A witness observed this and called 911 to report the fall, fire officials said.
“Rescue personnel ascended the mountain to reach the climber and provided emergency medical care. The climber was then carried 100 feet up the side of the climbing wall, and then another 400 yards to be transported down the mountain,” Gastonia Fire said in a written statement Friday.
The climber has been transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center for treatment.
