Neighbors in Florence say that Sgt. Terrence Carraway was more than a police officer, he was a peace officer. More than 800 people gathered inside First Baptist Church to remember the fallen officer at a vigil Thursday night.
Mourners topped a City of Florence patrol car outside the car with flowers, balloons, teddy bears, as the memorial grew.
“He’s a community hero more than anything,” said Spencer Jones.
Sgt. Carraway was shot and killed Wednesday night by a gunman holding children hostage in a home in the Vintage Place neighborhood. Six other law enforcement officers were hurt. At least two are now out of the hospital.

“My heart is broken,” said City Councilman Glynn Willis. “My family’s heart is broken. Our city is in morning.”
Florence City Council just honored Sgt. Carraway for 30 years of service. Now council is remembering his life, cut short.
“He is one of our first defenders. And he more than did his job and it took his life.”
Candles that were set aside for Christmas services were brought out for his vigil Thursday. The church was full of law enforcement comrades that knew him. And others who will only know of his sacrifice.

“That’s the biggest gift you can give,” said Sandra Willis. “And I don’t think he would have done it any other way.”
Sgt. Carraway leaves behind a wife, Allison, and a son. The community will gather again for a public viewing followed by a memorial service on Monday.
