MOORESVILLE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — A community is remembering a Mooresville police officer killed during a routine traffic stop on Saturday.

One by one, neighbors showed up to support one of their brother in blue, adding flowers and other items to a memorial for Officer Jordan Sheldon.

“It’s devastating. Absolutely devastating,” one community member said.

Sheldon, 32, was shot and killed around 10 p.m. Saturday night. He had pulled over Michael Aldona, 28, who was out on $2000 bond following a recent DWI arrest.

“He was very nice and upbeat. He was one who always wanted to help and make sure everyone was ok,” 17-year-old Slater McCray.

He knew Officer Sheldon personally. He says he played a key role in his life a few years back.

“He was one of the officers who helped me with a buddy who passed away about three years ago. If it wasn’t for him I probably wouldn’t be stable and be able to come out here and support him and his family,” McCray said.

Those that knew him best like Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams say Officer Shelton had a good sense of humor.

“Anyone who knows me knows I’m not that comfortable around K9s and that was kind of a running joke with Shelton and I with his dog Ramon. I would come around the corner and the K9 would be there. I would jump higher than you think I could jump. Those are the things I will remember most,” Williams said.

As community members wrote their final goodbyes, they said now is the time to come together.

“This is the time for us to love and united with each other.”
