CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Parents all across the state kept their children home from school on Monday, April 23 to send a message to state legislators about sex education in schools.

The North Carolina Values Coalition organized the #SexEdSitOut to fight what they call “radical, graphic, tax-payer funded, gender-bending sex education.”

In Charlotte, dozens gathered outside of the Government Center in Uptown at 5:00 p.m. for a rally.

The group feels that students are being taught “sexual liberation, deviance, and gender confusion” through sex education programs in school, and they’ve started a petition against the way children are being taught.

The petition has almost 41,000 signatures out of the 50,000 needed and says, in part:

  • We will not let our kids be helplessly sexualized in their classrooms.
  • We will not accept pornographic material in sex ed.
  • We will not stand by and let activists skew education
  • We will not let our tax-dollars be spent this way

Charlotte Mecklenburg School officials released a statement saying, in part:

Parents can opt their students out of sexual education classes offered through CMS schools. CMS encourages students and parents to make the most of every day to learn and achieve during the school year.
