HUNTERSVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Police have released the identity of the man killed by officers at a Huntersville hospital Sunday night.
Joseph Charles Cook, 76, was shot and killed at Novant Health Medical Center in Huntersville after police received reports of an active shooter situation.
Police say when they arrived on scene the suspect was armed and firing shots. The officers say they felt threatened and fired their weapons.
Reports indicate that Cook was traveling from Deland, FL to New York due to Hurricane Irma.
Huntersville Police Chief Cleveland Spruill said he believes his officers did the right thing, but also contacted the State Bureau of Investigation and requested a criminal investigation into the shooting.
