A Gaston County police officer is sharing memories of his late wife, nearly two weeks after she was killed in a, reported, deliberate wreck in Bessemer City.

“It’s hard to understand,” Josh Self said.

Self’s father, Roger Self, is accused of driving a vehicle through the Surf and Turf Lodge on May 20 — killing his daughter, Katelyn Self, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Self.

Josh Self and other family members, who there sharing a meal, were also injured in the incident but survived.

Witnesses said Roger Self joined them at the restaurant but left before driving the vehicle inside.

“Things don’t make sense,” Josh Self said.”But we have to put our faith in [God] that we’re going to all be called upon one day.

“We’ll see [Amanda] again one day.”

Amanda Self’s Funeral will be held at Bethleham Church in Gastonia on Sunday, June 3 at 4 p.m. It is open to the public.

“I was just telling my pastor earlier today that one of the songs that’s going to be sung is, “It is Well within my Soul,” Josh Self said.

Self said, it’s a fitting hymn, because those lyrics were hung near his bed by his wife, Amanda, before she had died.

“So, even now, it’s almost as if she’s still speaking to me, saying, it’s well. It’s O.K.”

Roger Self is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Self’s pastor said he was taking medication for anxiety and depression.
