CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A woman was able to fight off a young man who attempted to sexually assault her while she was watering flowers in her yard in Plaza Midwood Tuesday, officials said.

CMPD has obtained warrants for a 17-year-old in connection with this case. They said the suspect is currently being evaluated at a medical facility. The teen will be served once he’s released.

Officers were called to a home on Norcross Place in the area of Midwood Park around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 for a reported attempted sexual assault.

Neighbors who frequent the park were shocked to learn about the incident.

“Yeah that is surprising. Sun is up and people are on their way to work,” Wendy Fishman said.

The victim, a 34-year-old woman, told investigators she was watering flowers in her yard when a young man walked up and asked her if she had seen his lost dog. When she turned her back while talking to the man, he grabbed her and tried to sexually assault her. She was able to fight him off.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have increased patrols in the area and had investigative units searching the neighborhood throughout the day.

Neighbors said they saw the CMPD helicopter in the air throughout the day Tuesday. They hope whoever the suspect is will be caught before they strike again.

“We don’t want to encourage that kind of behavior around here. Everyone likes it because it is a safe place to live,” Joey Emanuel said.

Anyone with additional information concerning these cases or the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704.334.1600.
